DESCRIPTION: This is NOT a boring class where you make a few shaped beads with dots. Our soft glass based intro course is a comprehensive journey through every topic of study the new glass artist should understand + so much more... Studio setup, equipment hook up and maintenance, studio tool tour, understanding studio safety, glass coe discussions and a thorough understanding of annealing cycles lays a rock solid foundation of knowledge required to pursue the art form on one's own. At the torch, starleen articulates every motion made during demos as she patiently guides you through over 40 molten glass techniques at your own torch station. A few topics covered are: Setting different types of flames, how to hold and maneuver the mandrel. Description:
Do you have problems with everything smearing or internal patterns spinning out of control as you heat? After this private course, you will understand how to control the heat in your beads, learn the 10 parts of the flame and their unique purpose, and master 8 - 11 encasement techniques that will provide you with all the encasement excellence you desire. We then move on to a study of the many clear manufacturers at the torch, troubleshooting and visual demos of glass movement under encasement principals. An in depth study will also explain why common mistakes occur and how to correct vs. conceal flaws along the way.

This is a FIRM decision. The floral workshop taught twice monthly in 2007-2008 will not be offered until the projected date of 2011. Only the basic single layered flower is covered in both the intro and intermediate classes.

Your beads and pendant will created with momka, trautman color, northstar, glass alchemy, parramore, and borostix glass. This provides you with a basic understanding of how beautiful all the colors of boro are.
Some of the topics covered: Understanding all the key differences between soft and borosilicate glass, using a polariscope to identify stress in glass, secrets to achieving beautiful borosilicate color, extensive study on color selection and color families, understanding the differences between self strike/flame strike/kiln strike glass,utilization of your kiln as a tool, flame settings & why you need to switch things up, complex borosilicate cane construction. color layering, color mixing, mastery of haze entrapment, introduction to larger torches (optional), taming cadmium colors, tour of all whites on the market, using borostix, and one pendant creation to understand the fundamentals of off mandrel work.
